About Us
Who We Are
At Community UMC, we’re a welcoming community of believers with open hearts, open minds, and open doors. Founded in June 2023, we strive to follow Jesus’ teachings by asking “what would Jesus do?” and then actively living out that answer.
We meet every Sunday in the Fellowship Hall of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, located at 2500 McCann Rd, Longview, TX 75605. Join us for Sunday School at 9:00 AM and Church service at 10:00 AM.
Worship
Our unique partnership with St. Andrew allows us to offer enriching open Sunday School classes for all ages and monthly joint Church services. We cherish this collaboration and believe it fosters both understanding and community. On months with a 5th Sunday, we come together for a potluck lunch, further strengthening our bond.
Whether you’re seeking a spiritual home, exploring your faith, or simply looking for a welcoming community, we invite you to join us at Community UMC. We believe in open hearts, open minds, and open doors, and we can’t wait to welcome you with open arms.

Ed Blackstone
Retired Elder and former pastor
Edward (Ed) Blackstone is a husband, father, and grandfather and a graduate of the University of North Texas, (BBA), the University of Texas School of Law, (JD), and Perkins School of Theology at SMU, (M.Div.) He is a former Assistant District Attorney in Dallas, Texas; taught business law at the University of Texas at Dallas, and for 20 years was Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. His law practice was based in Dallas and later Longview Texas. He handled litigation in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio and other cities in Texas from Texarkana to Brownsville. Ed is an Ordained Elder in the Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church and has served as pastor in East Texas churches for over 20 years. His work with Community UMC is a labor of love.

David Dunaway
M.Div. from Perkins
David grew up in Conroe and then married far above himself. He and Lori were blessed with an amazing son who is in college and a dauntless daughter who attends LHS. If you can think of a job, David has done it. Examples include international development, petroleum engineering, dental assisting, public health, business development, and service as a Local Pastor in the UMC.
David served as a Page in the U.S. House of Representatives. He used his passport and credit cards to travel to 27 countries. He is a 30-year volunteer for The Committee for Rehabilitation Aid to Afghanistan.

Lew Dunn
Attorney and a long time Sunday School teacher
Lew Dunn is fond of saying: “Everything important in my life happened in the Methodist Church” — raised in Methodist parsonages and churches; married to Sue in the chapel of the Wesley Foundation by the UT campus (they will celebrate 59 years in June); holding different church offices in the former Greggton UMC; participating now in the exciting days of Community United Methodist Church in Longview. While finishing his PhD in German at UT-Austin, Lew taught in the English department of Huston-Tillotson University; after completing the degree, he taught in the German department at USC, then returned to UT-Austin to get his law degree; for over 40 years he has practiced law in Longview. He sees Community UMC as an example of what a United Methodist Church can be — meeting weekly in fellowship and worship, then going and sharing the love of Christ and the challenge of the Gospel in the larger world.

Sheryl Wittenbach
Certified lay servant
Sheryl has held two primary roles throughout her career: first as a Registered Dietitian and then as an educator. Following experience in various food service sectors, she transitioned to teaching, impacting students in Denton, Texas, Manhattan, Kansas, Boone, North Carolina, and Nacogdoches, Texas.
Passionate about both education and food, Sheryl affectionately embraces the role of “Cookie Monster” for her loved ones and those in need. Upon retirement, she pursued and achieved certification as a Lay Minister, aiming to share her foodservice and food safety expertise with interested churches. This is still a goal. As a Certified Lay Minister, Sheryl served at Danville UMC in Kilgore and now assists at CUMC.

Joanna McAtee
Pianist
Joanna began her career as a church musician (piano/organ) at the age of 12 for her home church in Warren, Ark. She has served congregations in the Seattle area, Washington D.C., Kalamazoo, Mich., and Charleston, S.C., as the family moved according to the needs of the U.S. Navy. The McAtees now call Longview, Texas home.
Joanna’s husband Jeff is a retired U.S. Naval officer, a longtime TV new broadcaster, and recently retired USEPA Regional Public Affairs Director in Dallas. They have three children—one who is following in Mom’s musical footsteps as a cantor and choral section leader at The Immaculata Catholic Church in San Diego, Calif.
